John Choi for Ramsey County Attorney gains steam

With current Ramsey County Attorney Susan Gaertner running for governor the important and powerful position of Ramsey County Attorney is open in what's shaping up to be one of the most interesting local races of 2010. So far the candidates are Ramsey County Prosecutor Dave Pinto and Roseville City Council member Tammy Pust. 2006 candidate Cory Tennison was running until he recently dropped out for personal reasons. So far Pinto has the most organized effort, he's hired a campaign manger, set up a web presence and had a campaign kickoff. But the field is not yet set, the most notable potential candidate is St Paul City Attorney John Choi. He's said that he is considering the race and would be a serious top tier contender if he got in.

So I was very interested when I noticed a new group on Facebook "Run CHOI Run!." This sparked my interest. It seems to be a fairly well organized effort with prominent backers. Here's some of what I found out with a little investigation.

Organizers:
The facebook group lists as it's admins two people, Kathleen Murphy and Tammy Tesky Ausen.

Murphy was a delegate to the 2004 Democratic convention, a member of Hillary Clinton's Minnesota steering committee and a IRV activist. Tesky Ausen has been active in DFL politics including serving as Executive Director at Minnesota Women's Political Caucus.

Members/Endorsers:
In addition to the impressive credentials of the organizers the group includes many prominent members.

Former candidate Cory Tennison posted this:

I have been a prosecutor for 8 years, and I know that our next Ramsey County Attorney must not only be firm, but also fair. John has the vision and management skills to be very effective. I am proud to call John a friend of mine and I fully support drafting him into this race.

RUN CHOI RUN!!!

Ken Iosso, aide to Ramsey County Commissioner Rafael Ortega posted this:

John Choi has guts. I've seen him sing "Suspicious Minds" seven or eight times at Karoeke and he really can't sing. The criminals of Ramsey County will have to look out. He's a serious, thoughtful attorney and he'll do a great job for the County.

And I had lunch with him the other day and I'd be shocked if he doesn't run.

And although membership doesn't necessarily mean they endorse the effort other group members include:

Duluth Mayor Don Ness
State Representative John Lesch
Obama for America Minnesota Political Director Dominick Washington
State Representative Sheldon Johnson
2002 DFL Secratary of State candidate Buck Humphrey

All in all a pretty impressive effort for a Facebook group started yesterday. Choi would undoubtedly be a formidable candidate if he gets in the race which seems likely according to Iosso.

Update from Grace Kelly:To this very excellent article, let me simply add that Cory Tennison has sent all of his supporters a letter that I quote with Cory's permission:

Our next Ramsey County Attorney needs to be a minister of justice.  This means that violent criminals must be punished to the fullest extent of the law.  It also means that when it is appropriate, restorative justice programs, drug and DWI courts, and prosecution diversion should be used to facilitate justice.  In the past couple years, I have gotten to know Saint Paul City Attorney John Choi and how he has implemented many of these principles at the city level.  We share similar views on criminal justice programs that keep our neighborhoods safe and ensure that justice is served.  I firmly believe that John Choi would be an excellent candidate for Ramsey County Attorney and I am hoping that he will choose to run.

The last I heard from John Choi, he was busy prosecuting RNC protesters, although it wasn't going very well.  Of the 10 defendants that went to trial, Choi managed one conviction on one count that resulted in a $50 fine.  It took a four day jury trial to get there.

http://www.twincities.com/news...

To his credit, Choi dismissed the charges against a lot of protesters, but still claims that the police acted appropriately in engaging in mass arrests of peaceful protesters.

http://minnesota.publicradio.o...

Chris Coleman has come out and said that what happened during the RNC was wrong, but Choi is apparently unrepentant.  Seriously, when the charges are deemed too frivlous to even prosecute, how can the police action be justified?  The cops didn't sort out who was breaking the law and who wasn't - they just arrested everyone.  And that's ok with John Choi.

Putting aside Choi's right-wing approach to civil liberties, why is St. Paul spending money on these prosecutions in light of the budget problems it faces?  A four day trial to get a $50 fine?  What a waste.

John Choi is an assclown who should be fired from his job as St. Paul city attorney, and not elected to Ramsey County attorney or any other position.

Dan, while we appreciate your critiques on RNC prosecution policy, the personal digs might be stepping over the line a bit. As a rule, try not to say anything about anyone here that you wouldn't be willing to say to their face.

Is that if Choi does run, then we do get to ask questions! I will be asking and I will be reporting. However, right now we still do not have an announced candidacy!

Yes and No (0.00 / 0)
He hasn't announced, but his candidacy is certainly being promoted.  I think if statements are being made by others in praise of Choi, its fair to discuss his record as St. Paul City attorney.

Choi has a track record -- and it ain't pretty (4.00 / 1)
John Choi prosecutes medics as if they were criminals.

The City of St. Paul prosecuted a medic who was helping a man in a wheelchair who had been pepper-sprayed by the police.  His crime: being there.  (Apparently, the man in the wheelchair 'deserved' to be pepper-sprayed.  Because he was there.)

This in spite of the fact that Minnesota has a "duty to assist" law that requires those on the scene of an emergency to render such assistance as they are able.

Does Ramsey County need an Attorney who prosecutes medics who are responding to a medical situation?

Does Ramsey County need an Attorney who thinks that it is OK to pepper-spray people in wheel-chairs?

Does Ramsey County need an Attorney who doesn't know that the state has a Good Samaritan" law and a "duty to assist" law  -- or doesn't care?

Does Ramsey County need an Attorney who bows to political pressure to prosecute medics when he should be looking for the officers who perpetrated this egregious misconduct?

IRV (0.00 / 0)
Its a little ironic that an IRV activist is backing Choi since he was instrumental in keeping IRV off the ballot in St. Paul because he believes it is unconstitutional.

I have to say that I agree with Choi on this one, though.

Who is the IRV activist that you are talking about? (4.00 / 1)
Just to clarify, I would have declared for Cory who is no longer in the race. I have not decided. I am merely reporting all the information that comes my way.

Kathleen Murphy (0.00 / 0)
the diary states that she is one of organizers of the Facebook page and that she is an IRV activist.

Grace, I know based on your other work that the police abuse during the RNC is a big issue for you.  I realize that Choi is an active DFLer and has a lot of friends, but you need to look at his conduct with regard to the RNC.

Quoted here as an IRV activist and I've been told she is very active in the St Paul IRV campaign.

Someone (not me) had posted a comment on the Run Choi Run Facebook page that was critical of his support for mass arrest of protesters at the RNC convention.  That comment has since been purged.  Because talking about Choi's Karoke abilities is much more important than his positions on civil liberties.

I posted the comment in Run Choi Run about the mass arrests (4.00 / 1)
Dan -

It was I, the other Dann, who posted the long comment about Choi's unrepentant support for the mass arrests during the RNC, with a link to the MPR story,
http://minnesota.publicradio.o...

on John Choi's facebook page Run Choi Run.
http://www.facebook.com/group....

Nigel Perry also posted the article, "Why St. Paul City Attorney John Choi is a danger to public safety".
http://rnc08report.org/archive...

Both of our conversations have been deleted.
I guess Choi's supporters are afraid of an open discussion of his record, other than his karaoke singing.
